A Château on the Côte d'Azur, Pressed in Gold: Our Black Velvet Venue Folio at Château Saint-Jeannet
There are venues that simply look like themselves — pleasant, well-photographed, easily forgotten. And then there are places like Château Saint-Jeannet, sitting on a hillside ten kilometres northwest of Nice, with stone walls that go back to the eleventh century and views that make everything feel properly far from ordinary life. When a couple planning their wedding here came to us, they didn't want a generic crest on a nice card. They wanted the building. Here is what we made for them.
A Building With a Long Memory
Château Saint-Jeannet, Côte d'Azur
The château's history on this hill goes back to at least the eleventh century, with Templar associations even earlier than that. It has been built, destroyed, and rebuilt more than once — which is part of why the 2009 restoration took two years and involved serious research into what the original fort actually looked like. The result is a building that feels genuinely old rather than decoratively old: the stone tower, the outer walls, the observatory — all placed where evidence suggested they originally stood.
It also happens to be the kind of place that photographs beautifully from every angle, which matters when you're about to ask an illustrator to reduce it to a single gold line drawing.
What We Made for Them
We drew a custom line illustration of the château from reference photographs — the tower, the walls, the roofline — and foil-stamped it in gold onto a 2mm clear acrylic card. That card sits inside a hardcover Black velvet folio, with the couple's monogram crest foil-pressed on the cover. The folio is the thing you hold. The acrylic is the thing that stops you.

We could have gone navy, or forest green, or any of the twenty velvet colours we work with. But Black was the only choice that felt honest to this building. Château Saint-Jeannet is not soft — it is stone and history and elevation. Against Black velvet, gold foil doesn't just look good; it looks like it means something. Every line of the illustration, every letter of the wording, catches the light with a clarity that lighter velvets simply don't give you.
The Reveal
We paired the folio with two cream envelopes — inner and outer — with gold foil addressing on the paper. A guest pulls something pale and quiet out of the post, breaks a gold wax seal, and finds a black velvet folio inside. It's a small piece of theatre, and it sets the tone for the wedding before a word of the wording has been read.
The Illustration Up Close
People are usually surprised by how much detail a foil stamp can hold. The tower, the walls, the outline of the hill — each element drawn from the actual building, not approximated from a generic castle template. It is a small, permanent sketch of the specific place where this particular couple married, and it will still be recognisable in thirty years.
Everything Inside
Beyond the acrylic card, the folio has a shaped black velvet pocket that holds however many inserts the couple needs — details card, RSVP, accommodation information. Everything finished in the same gold foil, so nothing feels like an afterthought.
What This Suite Actually Is
The Black Venue Folio Wedding Invitation is a hardcover Black velvet folio, foil-stamped with your monogram crest, containing a 2mm clear acrylic insert with a bespoke gold foil illustration of your wedding venue. The illustration is drawn from scratch for your specific building. A shaped velvet pocket inside holds your additional inserts, and the suite is completed with cream or velvet envelopes with gold foil addressing and a wax seal.
Is the venue illustration included in the price?
No — the base price covers the folio, acrylic insert, foil printing, and wording layout. The venue illustration is commissioned separately, since each one is drawn from scratch for your specific building.
Which velvet colours are available?
All twenty — including Black, Navy Blue, Burgundy, Forest Green, Sage Green, Blush, and Platine. Black is shown here, but the same suite works in any colour from the palette.
Can I see it in person before ordering?
Yes, and we'd recommend it. Order a sample first — feel the velvet, check the foil finish, make sure Black is the right depth for your wedding before committing to the full order.
If you're considering a venue illustration for your own folio, the simplest first step is to order a sample — feel the velvet, check the foil finish, and see the quality in person before you decide.
